Glasgow, I Love You: Trying to Woo a Magpie...

I first fell in love with magpies when I came to Glasgow. Pica Pica, as they are called in Latin is a curious bird. Related to the crow, it loves shiny things, taunting cats, and dog food. When I was in first year, I often had to walk through the park to get to university. Even on the gloomiest days their ridiculous goose step and bobbing heads cheered me up. When spring came, I began to photograph them. Then, Panda Bärr made me a shirt based off of a photograph I took. Right around that time, I learned the rhyme:

One for sorrow
Two for joy,
Three for a girl,
Four for a boy,
Five for silver,
Six for gold,
Seven for a secret never to be told...

If you look at the wikipedia article, you'll see that magpies attract their own folklore. There are many variations of the rhyme just between Wales, Scotland, and Ireland alone. Between trying to find a bird feeder for this lovely bird, (so as to get better photographs!) and trying to survive the exam period, I decided to see what sort of magpie-inspired art/jewelry was out there. Just to show my allegiance. Here are the ones I love the most and wouldn't mind owning at some point (courtesy of Etsy):

Two for Joy Magpie Silver-plated Locket (Adorapop)

Greedy Magpie Print (It Is Time for Tea, Hannah Greenwood)

Magpie Fascinator Hat (Linziwood)
